Maintain a consistent branding across the social media platforms that you use. This shows your professionalism, your confidence in yourself as an author and in your creativity. Your site is your strategic piece of online real estate that must be a hub for your online presence.

When you Google your name and ‘author,’ your website should pop up in the search result, followed by your social media profiles and your books on Amazon, Smashwords or Goodreads – if you are published.

One of the golden rules of writing is the ‘mini-skirt rule.’ Using the mini-skirt rule can certainly make your prose sexier and vibrant; if you get my drift.

The rule indicates that you should ‘keep your prose long enough to cover everything, but short enough to keep it interesting for your readers.’

Don’t have your writing dressed up like a Victorian lady trussed up in a ball gown with girdles and multi-layered petticoats, topped off with a jacket and a bountiful hat of peacock feathers and flowers. Phew! That is literally exhausting to think of.




It’s a fine art to write in a strategic manner and to create a balance between keeping the bare necessities with some flesh to the bones and over spilling the prose with excesses.

For writers of fiction, don’t waste your words and bore your readers to such tears that your story or your book ends up in the dust gathering pile of books that went unread.

When it comes to length, follow this rule in keeping your story short and engrossing and work at making your book ‘unputdownable.’

‘Cut. Cut. Cut.’

  • Cut words, like those unnecessary adverbs.
  • Cut sentences
  • Cut pages
  • Cut paragraphs
  • Keep it short and simple

Things to consider when editing.

  • Does your writing cover everything that your story needs?
  • Question the purpose of the words that you use.
  • Is it too long? Has it ceased being interesting? Are there bits that don’t add much value to the story?
  • Could your draft benefit by cutting off 10% from it?

If your writing is for an online audience, bear in mind that the readers’ attention span online is less than what is obtainable offline.

Keep your blog posts straight to the point. Have your readers engaged with your first fifty to sixty words.

There are days that you would find yourself scribbling and tapping away with much zeal and then the following day you wake up to a blank mind that stretches from one day to the other, then weeks…months…and you are waiting for the inspiration to ignite. You’ve just been visited by the gremlin that blocks creativity aka writers’ block.

Writers’ block can last for as long as it chooses if you let it. It’s a common malaise that every writer struggles with now and again, but the most important thing is what you do when faced with it.

Writing is an art that takes a lot of brain power, creative energy, focus and mental acuity each time. It’s not a science that has a ‘Eureka formula fix’ as such, we have to approach its solution with that in mind.

Igniting that inspiration is not going to happen unless you take it in hand and having been writing for a while, here are some of the prescribed methods I use to doctor my creative constipation to enable easier passage of inspiration.




Finding The Culprit

  • The Sly One called Distraction: We are all busy people and in the midst of creating space for our writing passion, life certainly gets in the way. It requires diligent scheduling and great discipline on our part to balance our various interests and be freer of distractions.
  • The Passion Thief: You started off with lots of zest hammering away at the words, then, gulp, your passionate inspiring sizzle dwindles down from that lustful chemical burst to a barely there romantic kindling. This could be due to boredom and not necessarily loss of zeal. You’ve probably obsessed and nitpicked the writing too many times that your mind and eyes are bored. Give it a break – a couple of days, while you immerse yourself in other stimulating things. Avoid editing your work till you get to the end of your first draft.
  • The Burnout Bummer: There’s so much going on in your present life that you are simply exhausted in the bid to balance everything else in your busy life. It’s not a block but a mental cry for a mini-rest. Take hours off in between hectic schedule and do other things that have absolutely nothing to do with your writing. Take a mini-vacation/staycation.
  • Mr Analysis Paralysis: You are constantly analysing your content, thinking that it’s lacking in some aspect to the point of OCD. This is counterproductive. In as much as it’s recommended to do your best work, taking hours on end just to critique every minutiae detail before doing the real writing is time spent in reverse.
  • The Empty Motivation Tanks: Yes indeed, there are those days that we are simply not motivated to do anything even the writing that we love so much ‘cue in Bruno Mars song today I don’t feel doing anything.’ Well, this is the time to dig into your motivation list. What gets your adrenaline revving to go? Indulge and wake up the juice.
  • Chief Indiscipline: The timing never seems right hence you procrastinate for as long as ever. Discipline is a key to getting any writing done.
  • Runaway Characters: You’ve created these interesting characters, and now after having written dozens of pages your characters have literally veered off in unexpected directions that you are struggling to get a grip of what direction to take the story. Take a day a two and give your brain a challenge to think of bigger plots and picture.
  • The Doubting Thomas: Many writers struggle with self-doubt. They don’t trust their ideas or putting it out there for others to see. Self-doubt and fear are major reasons some would-be excellent writers never get to become that writer that they dream of.

Simple Solutions to Takedown The Enemy

  1. Freewrite – write anything you can. What ‘s on your mind? Write it.
  2. Read some affirmative and inspiring quotes to motivate you.
  3. Take a walk – nature not only rejuvenates but brings forth inspiration.
  4. Eliminate distractions and focus on writing. Use your distraction free writing mode for your blog: Shift + Alt + W or Omniwriter. Turn off other distracting gadgets like your phone.
  5. Change your font family, size and colour. Sometimes little tweaks do the trick.
  6. Sweat it out. Do something to get your blood pumping faster, like exercising.
  7. Block out your writing time and make it a routine to write daily.
  8. Change your scenery. On days that I’m stuck, I go to the café, library, park or somewhere that catches my fancy.
  9. Find an exciting read, kick back and just soak in the penmanship of other authors.
  10. Listening to music works for me. I enjoy a medley of tunes and depending on the writing genre I go from classical to jazz to afro, pop, dance hall…
  11. Set it aside for a couple of days and meditate.
  12. Source for interesting writing prompts.
  13. Pretend that you are talking to someone and just let it flow.
  14. Spend time with someone who makes you feel good.
  15. Have a random chat with a stranger.
  16. Do more research, brainstorm your ideas.
  17. Indulge in other creative outlets.
  18. If the start of the passage is proving tough, start from the middle, the beginning will fall into place.
  19. Avoid editing while you write.
  20. By all means, leave perfectionism out of it.

Writers’ block is not insurmountable. Your possibilities are endless, but your action is critical for any solution to work. Once you kick-start a solution heading towards resolution keep a steady momentum and take off from there.

Even if your writing is about your shopping list or your writers’ block, just write. You’ve got this.

When you are writing, at the back of your mind, you have a picture of who your anticipated reader is. Who is this your ideal reader? Once you are able to figure this out, you are more positioned to approach your writing each day with purpose without sweating over the thought of how to say what you want to say.

Take a minute and think in this general direction depending on what your blog style is.

Who is your ideal reader for the post – male or female, age bracket, status: single, married, divorced…

Do they have children or not? Are they working? Do they have expendable cash? Do they have free time? What are their challenges?

This is just an exercise to help you understand your reader a bit better. It would not be precise but helps to build a picture of an audience.

Write Daily

Writing daily stimulates your creative thinking that even when you are not writing, that part of your brain that dissects your writing material keeps working.

It’s not necessarily material that you are going to publish that you need to write every day since you probably don’t publish daily. Create a habit of emptying your thoughts on paper or wherever suits you best even if they are just a jumble of words, just write them.

Take a little time to brainstorm on at least 10 personality attributes that you would like your blog to have, then narrow it down to 3 or most 5 key attributes that would represent your blogs’ voice. Each time you write, you would likely find a consistency with these attributes. For example:

If your blog is a lifestyle blog does it come across as open, sincere, heartwarming, friendly, passionate, sensitive, vulnerable, humourous, personal, relatable?

Be Authentic, Be Original

Please avoid bland writing that leaves your personality at the door of your thoughts. This would be selling you and your readers’ short. When you leave your personality out of your writing, you will sound strange and like someone else entirely.

You may have people who inspire and influence your thoughts with their writing, however, don’t run the risk of sounding like them. You’ll just be a poor copy. The same way your unique individuality applies to you as a person equally applies to your blog.

One of the early struggles of starting out writing is the attempt to fit your posts into a mold of what ‘makes an excellent’ blog post; using bold titles, finding the right title, using bullet points, SEO etc.

The temptation to follow rules overrides the impulse to write one’s unfiltered thoughts. By all means, use good rules of making your writing clear, watching your grammar and spellings, but don’t over-filter your thoughts.

Review your popular posts

If you’ve blogged for a while, there are those posts that resonated highly with your audience. Take some time to dissect them. What was on your mind when you wrote it? What mood were you in and what message did you want to convey? What type of vocabulary did you use? Was it a formal or informal style of writing?

You might be surprised at the amount of lessons that you would learn from this simple exercise and the takeaway from this is to imitate your success.

Have a message or purpose

Every blog post out there has an underlying message, even photos – which are known to speak a thousand words. Your post has an underlying message or purpose. What is it? Keep your focus on that message that you are trying to pass on so that your reader can find it and connect with it or with you – the voice behind the purpose.

Pretend

Pretend that you are not writing to the huge wide world of the blogosphere. Think that you are just writing a letter to that one ideal reader – we pointed out – at the beginning and just write as yourself. Who you are now!

Better still, pretend this is a conversation with one person, where you are saying your mind. This way, you cut out all the self-protective façade and mirrors people tend to put up in front of a large crowd and you’ll find the authenticity in your writing.

Think of how you would be narrating what you want to say as if the person is right there with you.

Please note that authenticity is not synonymous to hateful speech. Displeasure in thoughts could be expressed without denigrating your writing.

Don’t be afraid to ask others for feedback

This is the part most of us don’t like – asking for feedback, but I’ve learned that getting constructive feedback from others is priceless and far more valuable than our ego that tends to stand in the way.

When not sure of what you wrote, ask someone whose opinion you value. It may not be the cheerful all clear green light that you would like to have, but there could be useful nuggets of advice in the feedback.

Now you’ve found your voice

The thing to remember is that your writing is not for everyone, would probably annoy the heck out of some people but you will create a more dedicated readership.

Once you’ve found that voice that belongs to you, you’ll find that your readership engagement increases/changes for the better and helps you to build a sustainable blog in the long run.

We simply fail to remember that everyone else is busy getting on with their awesome writing and no one owes us an iota of that attention which we feel entitled to.

We must always realize that their time which they give to us is a privilege and when we get rid of our entitlement mindsets, we are less burdened with thoughts of expectations that don’t belong to us and we free our minds to greater possibilities which include getting more creative and leaving our glorified pedestals behind while we engage with others and build a community around us.

One book that I am glad I read and still refer to often is ‘How Successful People Think: Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life from non-other than the leadership expert John C. Maxwell.

Tenets grasped from this book has helped me immeasurably.

  • The idea that since you built a blog, they will come

You just set up your brand new blog and you think it’s a soccer pitch where fans gather in their thousands. Well, breaking news, blogging is a different game. It’s a butt flattening, finger tapping, elbow greasing, mentally demanding exercise and the rules are different. Your new blog is not going to start gaining loads of visitors overnight or even in several nights.

You’ve got to create enough content which would open inroads to your blog through search engines. Your content is your invitation to treat. You’ve got to build credibility as a reliable source of information as well as building your audience, so whoever told you that blogging or writing is an easy road to quick pickings is lying to you, however, if you stick to it, it would be worth its while at the end.

  • Your site is not useful

Many take up blogging for various reasons, but I have commonly heard/read others say that their purpose for starting a blog is to work on their writing, promote their published work, showcase their talent etc. At the bottom of this list of purpose’s is the forgotten reader who would form part of your target audience should he/she find something that retains their attention.

There are millions of talented writers/bloggers and other creative people out there in today’s frenetic pop culture world, and the only way to carve a niche is to stand out. Be useful to your audience so that they become your repeat customers.

Give out tutorials, free tips, worksheets,  e-books, even services etc. Promote others. People appreciate those who promote and help them to grow.

Make your posts count in some way. Whilst crafting your post, bear two things in mind:

The purpose of your post and what a reader takes away from it.

Of course, there are blogs that exist for the mere pleasure of writing personal journal’s, but my underlining question is ‘what is the long-term goal for your blogging ambition?’

Remember that by the time that you’ve honed your skills and published a book or two, the audience that you built would probably be your first customers and help to generate some growth for your blog.

  • You are inconsistent

Are your posts inconsistent and sporadic that no one is able to figure out when next they will read from you? Even when you do attract an audience and after a while, you are not posting regular engaging articles, they will lose interest and move on. This is a highly fluid and competitive existence, sadly.

Your frequency and consistency count. No, you don’t have to publish a thousand posts every day, besides, no one has time for all that, but consistency counts even if it’s one post per week. Create a schedule and keep to it.

  • Your writing sucks 

The quality of your post highly depends on the quality of your writing. An article that lacks clarity and filled with grammatical errors is tiresome to read. Sentiments aside, tackle grammar and spelling issues by using writing aids such as Grammarly and proofread your work before publishing. No one is above making mistakes even if you are a solid 5-star writer.

Many times I’ve come across posts that I would like to comment on or leave a footprint to show that I visited, only to find that there are no buttons or that the buttons don’t work.

It’s imperative to add your social network buttons or a comment bar to your posts to enable your readers’ to share your content as well. This would help you to gain a new audience that you may not have been able to connect to on your own.

You should also note that publishing a post that’s been automated to share on social platforms is not enough. Publishing a post is not an end itself. You have to interact with your readers where they are and this might mean scheduling time to read other people’s’ articles, create conversation, share their work as often as you can.

Social media is a huge opportunity to grow your blog. Use it optimally.

  • Your site lacks focus and is poorly branded

Your interest is diverse and you want to write a bit about everything, which is not a bad thing in itself. I equally have an eclectic taste in reading and writing and a bag full of opinion to go with it, in fact, I’ve gotten into an argument over this topic before – I was on the side of writing whatever pleases me on my blog as against having a blog with a narrow focus that boxes you in.

However, your divergent interests and ideas may not work together on one site which is what led me to set up this blog where I could talk about specifics of – blogging, writing, photography, speaking…while my other blog is for poetry, fiction, life lessons…

The truth is that when a blog is narrowed down to certain specifics, it’s easier to keep the attention of a focused audience who already have an idea of what they want to read.

What reference points do you want your site identified with? That answer is the key to your question of what you should focus on.

Finally, if your site is one hot mess of a place, cluttered without direction, it’s visually unappealing and appears unserious. Take a bit of time to streamline your site, clean it up and keep it professional.

  4. Look back at your posts that tanked. Figure out why they did so and avoid repeating the same mistakes.
  5. Use engaging photos. The world we live in is highly visual driven and this equally applies to online engagements. People like to look at interesting imagery. Avoid tagging on tacky looking photos and consider taking or creating your own pictures to avoid copyright issues.
  6. Increase your font. Some use fonts others have to squint to read. No one wants to get cross-eyed trying to read an article that is probably not that interesting. Give your words more clarity and check your errors.
  7. Promote others, you promote yourself. This is not rocket science. Find time to consistently promote others in your niche and they will stick with you.
  8. Try to make your posts useful.
  9. Make your content witty, add a bit of humanness to it, share anecdotes of your experience. People connect to some emotional engagement.
  10. Ask for feedbacks at the bottom of your post from your readers. You could even use a poll to find out what they would like you to blog about.
  11. Check your site speed. Nobody likes a slow blog and if your blog loads too slowly, chances are the reader would lose interest and move on. For WordPress.com bloggers this might be less of an issue, but for self-hosted .org sites, your loading speed counts. A fast blog is achieved by using fast servers. Based on my experience of as an author of a blog that has run for only 18 months and in that short while, has over 1,800 published and well-received posts, I’ve compiled a help list of blog post ideas and activities that you can bookmark and refer to as often as you need to and this list is more than enough to keep you busy for a while depending on your publishing frequency.

Now, let’s quickly go through them.

If someone is starting out in your field of interest, what top advice would  you offer them? Create a series where you document your learnings with the world of WordPress. This helps you to keep an eye on how far you’ve come and to keep up your focus. Your story could inspire others.

It could be a simple checklist of resources that you use and people like checklists that they can quickly run through.

Yes, we love holidays and part of blogging is also to make emotional connections with your readers. It could be a little story on how you couldn’t blog because you chose to spend more time with family and recommendations on how to get past those days that you are unable to blog.

We all search for new ways each day on how to improve on our habits profitably. Sharing your ideas and tips is never a bad idea.

#6. Write a how to start a project post for a beginner

This could be on your photography, writing, e-commerce, becoming an artist, the list is endless.

#7. Networking advice post

What social mediums work for you? How you’ve managed the multiple medias out there? What would you recommend to others?

#8. Writer a common Mistakes post

What are the common mistakes that you’ve observed in your niche? What possible solution would you suggest?

#9. Create a Blog Series

If a blog topic is a long one, consider expanding it by breaking down into series. For instance, I break my Writers tips series into little digestible bits, because there are loads of tips to write about.

Appreciating those who support you now and again through a form of mention is a great idea. People love being appreciated.

Throw it out into the open.

Include a brief description of who they are and their social links for others to check them out.

#14. Create pick of the week for your readers

Outline the best posts you read during the week and what got your attention and why you consider them valuable.

Familiarize with other bloggers who you could interview and mine their thoughts for ideas.

#50. Use keywords as inspiration.

When your creative juice runs dry, you could find inspiration through Google Trends by using keywords in your niche. It’s a tool that uses search facts to decide how many times a word or phrase is used in a given period. This way, you know what’s now trending on a particular subject, that you type in. Pretty effective and easy tool to use.

Hopefully, these ideas that you could tweak to suit your purpose will keep you busy for some time. However, remember that whatever you blog about, enjoy the process and let it be something you are passionate about, that way your inspiration will not wane easily. Have fun

When writing, focus on the intention of your writing. What message are you trying to convey? Do your words express your message as you would like it to? What impression would you like the communication to leave on your readers?

By focusing on these things, you place yourself in a state of mind where you are able to sense what you want to express as well as trying to get into your readers head.

This approach makes it easier for your words to flow naturally and unstinted. It’s equally a great strategy to overcome writers’ block and many forms of a writers’ anxiety.
